What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a hands-on treatment carried out with the person lying down, fully clothed on a treatment table. A very light and gentle touch is used and people can feel a deep relaxation and sometimes sensations such as heat, tingling or pulsation.
Who is it suitable for?
Due to its gentle, non-invasive nature Craniosacral Therapy is suitable for people of all ages including babies, women in pregnancy and older people, and has helped with many conditions.
How does it work?
Physical Level:
In health the human body expresses a constant, subtle pulsation.
At the heart of this is the ebb and flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes the brain and spinal cord. The cranial bones and the sacrum (at the base of the spine) move to allow for the ebb and flow of fluid. This subtle pulsation can be known as craniosacral motion. Through this motion the 'life force' or 'potency' is distributed to the cells, tissues and structures of the body maintaining organisation and health.
Restrictions to craniosacral motion can be caused by such things as accidents, stress, or traumatic experience, as the body contracts in response to them. If this contraction remains, levels of vitality, health and well-being can become compromised, and illness may result.
Craniosacral therapists listen to the subtle motions in the body, sensing areas of restriction, and assisting the body's own self-healing Intelligence to release those restrictions. This supports healthy function to be restored.
Mind and Body:
Craniosacral Therapy recognises the deep relationship between mind and body, acknowledging that life experiences which may overwhelm a person's resources, such as birth, accidents or other stressful events can be 'remembered' by both body and mind. These experiences may continue to affect emotional as well as physical health long after the initial event.
Craniosacral treatment aims, therefore, to support well-being as well as physical health.
